My First Day at a New School

B1

When Daniel's family moved to a new town last September, he knew that he would have to start at a different school in the middle of the school year. He had lived in his old town his whole life, and the thought of leaving his friends behind made him feel anxious. On the morning of his first day, Daniel woke up much earlier than usual. He got dressed slowly, ate only half of his breakfast, and checked his bag three times to make sure he had everything he needed: his books, a pen, and the map of the school that his mother had printed for him.

When his father dropped him off in front of the school gates, Daniel felt his stomach tighten. Hundreds of students were walking past him, talking and laughing with their friends, and nobody seemed to notice the new boy standing alone by the entrance. He took a deep breath and walked inside, following the signs towards his new classroom.

The teacher, Mr. Wilson, welcomed Daniel warmly and asked him to introduce himself to the class. Daniel's hands were shaking slightly as he said a few words about where he had moved from and what hobbies he enjoyed. To his relief, nobody laughed, and a few students even smiled at him.

During the morning break, Daniel sat alone on a bench near the playground, unsure of what to do. He watched the other students playing football and chatting in small groups, and for a moment, he wondered if he would ever feel like he belonged there. Just as he was about to take out his book to read, a boy from his class, Tom, walked over and sat down next to him.

"You're new, right?" Tom asked, smiling. "Want to play with us? We need one more player for our team."

Daniel hesitated for a second before nodding. He spent the rest of the break running around the playground with Tom and his friends, laughing more than he had in weeks. By lunchtime, he was sitting at a table with five new classmates, all asking him questions about his old school and telling him jokes about the teachers.

When Daniel got home that evening, his mother asked him how his first day had gone. He smiled and told her that, although it had started badly, it had turned out to be one of the best days he'd had in a long time. He already had plans to meet Tom and the others at the weekend, and for the first time since the move, he felt excited about the future rather than worried about it.
